Securing Excellence

At Rougham, excellence in French is achieved through the implementation of a high-quality language curriculum using the Rigolo scheme of work and resources. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge, which begins in Year 3 and continues through Key Stage 2. Children continuously build on their previous knowledge as they progress in their foreign language learning journey. Children are encouraged to share their learning and understanding through a range of different tasks, including writing, speaking and listening activities.

Harnessing Connections

As the children progress through the school, previously learnt language is recycled, revised, recalled and consolidated whenever possible, enabling children to be successful in their acquisition of a foreign language.

Inclusivity

Teaching French in Key Stage 2 provides the children with an opportunity to learn a shared, common language beyond English or their home language. Our approach to French and our SHINE curriculum both have the same principle: everyone can learn and enjoy French. The children start learning French in Year 3 and we believe every child can access the learning and can do this with success. French is taught in a variety of ways, using pictures, words, videos, listening tasks and oral activities. All children are given the same opportunities to develop their learning and understanding in French in order to achieve their full potential.

Nurturing curiosity

At Rougham, we understand the importance of providing a curriculum which takes into account the backgrounds and needs of all pupils. A high-quality language education enables us to broaden children’s horizons and aspirations and guide them to being global citizens. Our French curriculum fosters children’s curiosity by offering them opportunities to:

  •  explore the relationships between language and identity
  • deepen their understanding of other cultures and the world around them
  • develop a greater awareness of self, others and cultural differences

Engaging experiences

At Rougham, we aim to create learning opportunities which develop a sense of enjoyment and curiosity amongst the children. One of the highlights of the school year is our language enrichment day whereby children are immersed in a range of different languages, including: French, Spanish, Japanese and British Sign Language. The intention of this enrichment day and our French SHINE curriculum is to enthuse and excite the children to be life-long language learners.
